Time Security – The Winding Path to Deployment

Wednesday | 2:50 - 3:10 pm

Recent events and the resulting press coverage continue to highlight the strong requirement for multiple layers of security and varied types of defenses for all environments. Historically, the time service community has not had very many tools to use to address these growing concerns. However, the last few years have seen the development of a number of time security standardization efforts focused on improving the security of time synchronization protocols. Recently, both the IEEE Precise Time Protocol (PTP) and the Network Time Protocol (NTP) communities completed work on new security mechanisms to be used on conjunction with those protocols to improve the security posture of the resulting systems. Now is the time to focus on early implementation, interoperation, testing, and deployment activities. This presentation will focus on the two emerging standards from the IETF and IEEE along with the ongoing efforts to accelerate their implementation, deployment, and successful operation.
